2beegames contest, finalists announced ($10,000 to win)

Hi everybody,

I would like to mention that the GMC user edcachun's game have been nominated as finalist in the 2beegames contest. Link to 2beegames: http://www.2beegames.com/. His game is named savetheplanet and he have a chance to win $10,000. His game is truely good and also original (take note that every sprites are made with game maker sprite's editor).

Winner is selected as a result of our votes. However, I think we should show him our support.

From 2beegames:

  • The Grand Prize Winner will receive $10,000 and the option to negotiate a publishing deal.

  • Community Favorite wins $5,000 and runner up wins $2,500.

  • ROUND ONE ENDS on the 7th of June at 11:59PM. The two games with the fewest votes will be eliminated at the end of this round.

  • A word of caution, you can have ONE vote, and you can only cast it once!

  • ROUND 2 Begins on June 8th. COME BACK TO KEEP YOUR FAVORITE IN THE GAME!

Hey, that's awesome. Congrats to edcachun.

Auditorium is going to be tough to beat. I just hope GMC doesn't ruin things for edcachun by trying to "game the system" like with the Startup 2.0 thing from last year.

I do not understand? what do you mean by "game the system"?

Also sorry for the mistake, actually, his gmc name is Ed_cachun wink Finally, it is shady to see a game such as auditorium (which is a type of game that does not fit average gaming audience) taking the lead with over 60% of all votes. I have been following the contest and auditorium went from under 5% to 60% in not even one day. Can 2beegames be hacked or did they release a massive advertising campaign? Well I cannot be sure about this.

That's exactly what I mean by "game the system". Some people are better at generating votes than others, usually through forums, and it's kind of not fair to other authors who aren't as social. Internet popularity contests are always a problem. These games should be judged on their merits, not the level of promotion behind them.

I believe a similar thing happened to YoYo Games in the Startup 2.0 contest last year. GMC is huge community and everybody voted YoYo up like crazy. Apparently, YoYo was disqualified because of this. They were not included with the group of winners, despite having the second most number of votes (I think; they were way at the top). The official reason Startup gave for YoYo's disqualification was that YoYo was not a Web 2.0 website, which is demonstratably false.

Hmmm, I guess it was two years ago. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

I hope that winners are not only based on votes. I have played on each games, autitorium is such a great game but a little boring in the end. I hope that judges are going to be wise about this.

Looks like he was disqualified. A message on the game's page says it was because the game had been entered into the YoYo Games Contest #4. I couldn't find anything about limitations regarding other contests, but the rules do say something about not being allowed to have licensed the game to any third parties. If it was uploaded to the YoYo Games server, it was licensed to them. Too bad.

Ouch judges should have checked that before announcing it as a finalist... He has been nominating essentially, he should stay. I have looked on the website and have not seen anything saying Ed's game was disqualified. However I saw someone telling that this game should be disqualified because it has entered yoyogames contest.

Two games have been retired due to not enough vote and savetheplanet is still running up.

I clearly didn't read carefully enough. I saw the 2beegames avatar and assumed it was staff.

Save the Planet now has 22% of votes and is tied for the lead with Buccaneer Battle. Sort of surprising to see Buccaneer Battle at the top, I didn't like it at all.

This is the 2nd round, I think there are 3 in total. Actually there is a 5,000$ and a 2,500$ prizes from public. Publication and 10,000$ prize is determined by judges. As somebody said in savetheplanet's comments, it is a perfect game for the Wii.

Which finalist's game is your favorite so far xot?

Re: 2beegames contest, finalists announced ($10,000 to win)

Well, I haven't played them all yet.

I thought Save the Planet had really nice presentation, very polished looking. Some interesting dynamics between the shooting and healing. The first "boss" battle is a problem, I can't understand how to get past it after several tries. I'm probably going to play it some more.

Buccaneer Battle was just boring and repeatitive. Even for a Flash game, it's really lacking.

Auditorium is a cool idea. The music gets old but I like the way it works. I just wish there was more variety. The game itself is a little buggy and sometimes lacks good feedback. It's clean and simple, but there just isn't much there. Needs work. It's tempting to try to recreate this in Game Maker.

I still haven't tried Bumps, Heresy War, Storm, and The Pretender. I'm looking forward to those. Aces Wild is not appealing.

For savetheplanet's first boss, a rare bug occurs where nothing happens while shooting at him. But if you did not know, before the first boss gets 'activated', you need to drop a water blop on him after which he will begin to attack you.

Storm have such a unique gameplay but is boring after some times.

Re: 2beegames contest, finalists announced ($10,000 to win)

Eduoard Mercure, the creator of Save the Planet has received the Community Favorite Runner up Prize, and the $2,500 that goes with it.

w00t! Not the grand prize, but as I said to Ed, $2500 isn't too shabby.

Not surprised to see Auditorium and Storm taking the top spots, those are interesting and fresh games, if limited.

I would have posted this sooner but I was apparently a little confused about something. I thought the voting went until June 30th, but the announcement is actually from the 22nd. Strange.

Anyway, can't wait to hear about the next contest and the future of Auditorium. I'd love to see 2BeeGames get this game on a console. That would impress me to no end. Looking forward to the next contest, maybe I'll enter. I think the competition is going to be a lot more fierce. With GM8's release eminent, maybe they'll be a new YoYo contest announced soon as well. Wouldn't mind getting in on that action, too.

Oh yeah, I'll also add that I thought the other GM game, Bumps, was very, very nice. Really beautiful work. I don't understand how it didn't do better. My only problem with the demo is that most of the levels were extremely simple. You could see how there was potential for depth in the game, but the demo ends before it gets to that point. World of Goo, which is similar in a lot of ways, did a much better job of selling itself with it's demo. I bought that immediately. I didn't get the same urge from Bumps. World of Goo also has a charming atmosphere and back story that Bumps lacks, so that's probably part of it.
