E3 2010

E3 is this week and it's going to be a weird one. Sony and Microsoft will be pushing their new motion control systems (Move and Kinect, respectively) as they push their core audience to the side. Nintendo will hopefully shed some light on their Vitality Sensor and 3DS.

You can watch the big three pressers live here:

Of course, I want to see if S&M do anything other than Wii-style games for their launch. So far, from what I've seen, they are doing little explore new territory, although Microsoft has a leg up on the others for most game play. I think they are also going to be showing some kind of media interface inspired by Minority Report. Nintendo's 3DS is extremely intriguing and I'm hopeful they'll show the new Wii Zelda game and maybe something about Pikmin 3. Can't say I'm overly interested in too much else that's on the E3 schedule, I don't have any of the current gen consoles, but E3 always gets me fired up nonetheless.

A couple of other big press events are coming up today as well:

EA - Monday, June 14th, 2 PM PST

According to IGN, this is the entire E3 event schedule, all times are PST. I'm not sure if they are covering everything live, but I presume they are. There are an awful lot of "confidential" entries, which I guess are unannounced games. I hope one of them is a big Valve reveal, although they've been giving out some mixed messages lately.

Re: E3 2010

Here's my impressions of the Microsoft event. They did a very good job of following up of their exceptional show from last year. From a productions standpoint, it was very impressive and slick: beautiful multi-tiered stage, technically sophisticated and ambitious, diverse spokespeople, very smoothly scripted, and virtually flawless execution from beginning to end.

The start was a little slow, because naturally everybody wants to know about Natal, now called Kinect, and just as naturally, Microsoft saved that for the end. I'm going to cut to the chase. Microsoft presented Kinect in a very, very smart way, by only showing things that are simply impossible on competing hardware (with a few exceptions). It drops November 4th in the US, and worldwide shortly thereafter. No price was given. That's not a good sign; remember the PS3?

Starting with the Kinect integration with media consumption, I was not overly impressed. They showed competent speech recognition (eg. "Xbox, play music"), and some strangely vague and conservative gesture control. I like to think there is room for improvement here, but maybe not, which I'll get to in a bit.

A bit more interesting from a marketing perspective is a deal with ESPN. They've got all the sports TV you could possibly want. The service is one part DVR and one part website. You can get an instant replay with a voice command, you can track scores in other games as they happen, you can pull up stats. It's all HD of course and it could really appeal to sports fans. The service is free for XBox Live Gold subscribers and it's an XBox exclusive for 2010, 2011, and 2012. That seems to indirectly confirm that there is not going to be a new generation of XBox anytime soon.

On to Microsoft's Kinect games. For the kiddies, a virtual pet toy called Kinectimals was shown. It's is a bit tepid, seeming to be little more than N64's Hey You, Pikachu! meets Milo, but there is some clever use of Kinect on display, particularly petting the animals, and the speech recognition worked very well. It will appeal long enough to the little ones for mommy and daddy to purchase it. It was aptly demonstrated by an adorable little girl who was a total pro.

Even something as derivative sounding as Kinect Sports proved to be a unique gaming experience, although there is some natural overlap with Wii Sports games. Basically track and field events, and any kind of sport that doesn't involve a hand-held prop. And bowling. They just couldn't resist.

Joy Ride finally reared its head again after a year of total silence. First it was a nifty avatar-based kart racer. It's now a questionable avatar-based Kinect game. Hold your hands at ten-and-two and steer. Shove forward for turbo boost. Looked like a severely crippled game that might have once given ModNation Racers a run for its money. Now it's castrated. Very disappointing.

A bit more interesting is Kinect Adventures, which is clearly pitched at families. Looks like it could be some good fun. This is the game that Parade Magazine got a peek at which resulted in a widely mocked video of seemingly pointless flailing. It's not quite so ridiculous when played by a Microsoftie, but it still may belie the notion that Kinect is especially intuitive. They showed a river rafting game and something like human Tetris. At the end of each game, it is able to display actual snapshots of the players at certain critical moments (eg. jumping in unison). It reminded me of the snapshots that you sometimes see as you exit a theme park ride. Clever but meh-worthy.

Next up, Ubisoft took the stage. They've got a fitness game called Your Shape: Fitness Evolved. It is everything that Wii Fit can never be. It's pretty impressive and it might be a system seller. It's also revealing. You can get a very, very clear idea of what the resolution of the Kinect depth camera is. As I thought, it's quite low. I can see the next generation of this technology really opening things up for fine control.

Harmonix/MTV were next, and they had by far the most compelling reason to get a Kinect. Dance Central is pretty much the ultimate dance game. It's very simple. You simply perform professionally choreographed routines to pop music. There's no cheating, you have to actually dance. It has a coaching mode that can probably teach someone as uncoordinated as me to dance, and that's saying something. Comes with hip-hop, dance, and pop tracks, has 600 moves, 90 routines, and downloadable tracks in the future. It looked like it could be a lot of fun and the Harmonix guys were rightly proud. This game is going to get a lot of white dudes laid.

Microsoft then announced an exclusive LucasArt's Star Wars lightsabre game. You know, the game Wii fanciers have been clamoring for the last three years? Did Nintendo just get pwnt? Looked kinda, um, dream-like? I don't know, there seems to be some inherent lag in the Kinect that gives a real feeling of disKinection. Hur hur.

The Forza guys took the stage and showed off a very shiny car porn game that played with the same invisible steering wheel that Joy Ride has. Again, there is no indication of how accelleration and breaking is supposed to work. Highly skeptical of this one, especially after seeing what is basically raw Kinect data displayed in Your Shape.

Finally, Microsoft confirmed the new slimmer XBox360, cleverly revealed by sliding the case off of the conspicuous XBox360 on the stage to show a smaller XBox inside. Bigger hard drive, WiFi N, and "whisper quiet". News that it was the same price ($299) was met with weak applause. It's shipping today and everyone in attendance at the event is getting one free! Even weaker applause. Ouch. Regardless, it is clearly the XBox to get ... as long as it doesn't have the same penchant for self-destruction as its older brothers.

OK, so Microsoft put on a really, really good show. As good as it was, I didn't personally see a compelling reason to get a Kinect. Critically, they showed off only a few things that will appeal to their core audience, namely Call of Duty: Black Ops, Halo: Reach, Gears of War 3, and slice 'em up MGS: Rising. They are clearly trying to court a new market and the fanboys aren't going to like it. Right now, the question on everyone's mind is: who kidnapped Milo?

Sony and Nintendo have their work cut out for them, at least in terms of pure flash. I think Nintendo will get by just fine on new software and the 3DS. Sony is going to have a much harder time differentiating Move from the Wii. It should be interesting to see how the shows contrast.

I know... the xbox needs more POWER methinks (Does the xbox handle the shape recognition or is it part of the camera hardware though). But, I played the Wii last New Year's Eve, first time, I was sorely disapointed in the amount of lag in that controller. I just could not believe it. I asked the owner of the Wii if the controller was always laggy or maybe it needed fresh batteries. His answer, what laggy? what do you mean? It's always like that. I guess the player compensates for it and addapts. I would imaging the same for this particular xbox setup.

Guess not. Wiki
Kinect hardware is confirmed to be based on a reference design and 3D-sensing technology made by Israeli developer PrimeSense Ltd.[23]

http://www.primesense.com/

Although the sensor bar was originally planned to contain hardware that would process such elements as the bone system used to map player actions, this idea was later dropped in favour of a software solution owing to a desire to reduce Kinect's price.[36] Subsequently, processing that was originally intended to be done on this hardware will now be handled by the Xbox 360 console, resulting in an estimated usage of 10 to 15% of the Xbox 360's computing resources for Kinect-related processing.[37] Several commentators believe this will mean patching older games to use Kinect will be unlikely, with Kinect-specific concepts instead likely to be the focus for developers using the platform.[36]

I think I will wait for the next gen if one is comming along. My XBOX lasted 7 years. Then I got the 360. I would think MS is comming out with a new box in 2012, given MS' 5 year philosophy.

Re: E3 2010

It's hard to judge the responsiveness of Kinect based on the videos, especially the on-stage demos. Projection screens, in particular those used at events, often add several frames of delay, and each piece of video equipment that a video signal passes through also adds at least one or two more frames of delay. For a big production like that, involving a lot of switching equipment, multiplexers, decoders, encoders, filters, amplifiers, along with the projection screen itself, the extra delay could be significantly higher than what the player would actually see, probably on the order of a half-second or more. I'm willing to give Kinect the benefit of the doubt, but I think it is highly unlikely that it or Sony's Move are any more responsive than the Wii remote.

Re: E3 2010

You're <prob> right. I seem to recall a point in the presentation where you see the presenter on both the huge screen and the live cam with a delay. but I cant say for sure. I've been watching many youtube videos and other stuff online so I may be confusing memories..

Re: E3 2010

Nintendo listens. That's what I came away with from their E3 presentation. They really pulled out all the stops and in a way -- actually several ways -- seemed to do the impossible.

Nintendo has had an uphill battle with the "hardcore" for several years now. They feel like Nintendo has simply abandoned them for easy casual bucks. Today Nintendo did a lot to finally address that.

But not without one more uphill battle. They wisely -- and in retrospect, critically -- showed the new Zelda game for Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, coming in 2011. Graphically, it's sort of a hybrid between Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. It has the Twilight Princess geometry, but rendered more akin to Wind Waker. It's not quite cel-shaded, but very colorful and almost paintery. Interesting new Wii Motion Plus mechanics were shown ... but not shown well. Right away, it was clear something wasn't quite right. The presentation soon turned into a technical disaster. Apparently radio interference from the audience was making the Wii remote wig-out and the game was essentially unplayable. It was tough seeing Shigero Miyamoto himself attempt and fail to demonstrate what they've been working so hard on. 1-to-1 sword and shield play: broken. Flying remote-control beetle: broken. New whip: broken. New bomb controls: broken. New slingshot: broken. New bow and arrows: broken. New inventory system: broken. I'm sure all these thing work correctly under normal circumstances, and they look fun, but up on stage in front of so many people, it failed utterly. Luckily this was the only major disaster and it happened at the beginning. If the show ended this way, it would have put a major damper on an otherwise extraordinary presentation.

After playing a bit of defense by deflecting often uttered criticism of the casual market using hard numbers to show that casual matters, Nintendo rolled out a series of game announcements that are sure to please many of their long-time hardcore supporters as well as Ninty Noobs.

First up is a crossover title, Mario Sports Mix. Similar to other Mario themed sports titles, it includes volleyball, basketball, hockey, and dodgeball, with game play twists we've come to expect in games set in the Mario universe. Looks like fun. Also not coming until 2011.

Next is Wii Party. Basically a Mario Party style of game, but played with Wii avatars and a like Wii Sports Resort in theme. Not much more to say except that it is coming this holiday, a phrase which will be tossed out quite a bit from now on.

Just Dance 2. Snooze. Sorry.

Now on to some nostalgia. Golden Sun: Dark Dawn was shown again for DS. I'll never get over the granularity of the DS 3D graphics. Or maybe I will, but more on that later. This is a top-down RPG with turn based combat, stylus heavy control and it's coming this holiday.

Now for a bit of the impossible. They said it would never happen, but GoldenEye is coming to Wii from Activision. Looks like they are trying to capture that lightning in a bottle again by changing very little about what made GoldenEye great. The most visible change is Daniel Craig as Bond. In addition to single player campaign, 4 player split-screen and network multiplayer. Coming this holiday.

Next Warren Spector takes the stage with the mysterious Wii exclusive, Epic Mickey. It's a classic, hub-based 3D platformer with the chief game mechanic being the use of paint and paint thinner to alter the game world as you play. Apparently the game plays and characters react differently depending on your choices. Coming this holiday.

The next thing squirted from the nostalgia tube is a well-kept secret and something gamers have been begging for. A new Kirby game, Kirby: Epic Yarn. This game is absolutely beautiful-looking and appears to be quite fun. Everything is constructed from strings of yarn in a fabric universe. Lots of nice springy physics going on with yarn whipping about and an equally dynamic hand-stitched world. Extremely cute but who cares. Coming this fall.

Dragon Quest IX, which has been out in Japan for quite some time. 120 mini-quests, 900 items, 300 monsters, and apparently some dynamically generated content as well. It's coming to North America July 11.

Nintendo next showed the divisive Metroid: Other M. It looks like a tremendous amount of effort has gone into making it look like a real Metroid title, and not a Ninja Gaiden beat 'em up. I now excited for this game, it looks great. Coming August 31.

Another game oldschoolers have been harping for is finally getting a Wii installment. I'm talking about Donkey Kong County Returns. It's DKC through and through but now rendered with realtime 3D. Looks fantansic. I've never been a DKC fan, but I'd play this one. Coming this holiday.

And now for the moment we've all been waiting for. What the hell is the 3DS all about? Well there it is, right on stage. If you've seen the Kotaku mockup, it's basically identically. Form factor is like a DS and it is DSi compatible. It has a touch screen on the bottom with a wider 3.5 inch screen on top. The top screen is glasses-free stereoscopic 3D. It has a slider to control the amount of 3D effect or eliminating it all together. It has an analog controller, called a slide pad, where the DS D-pad is. The D-pad has been moved below it. It has dual cameras on the back so that it can take 3D photos. It will be able to play 3D Hollywood movies as well. Some other hardware upgrades include motion and gyro sensors, and the ability to automatically download content for games even when they aren't being played. WiFi network remains free. The hardware inside has been significantly upgraded which the next software title shown clearly demonstrates.

For the final cat in the this bag, Nintendo appeals to their most devoted long-time fans with a long overdue game update: Kid Icarus Uprising. For the first time we can see the games this new handheld is capable of. Graphics appear to be very nearly GameCube quality. The graphics are spectacular for a handheld. The game itself looks like a lot of fun with clear attention being paid to the stereographic display. Even though a normal screen can't convey the experience, you can see how this could work really well for a lot of games. Can't wait to actually see this in 3D.

Developers are clearly drooling over this thing as there are many already working on it so there is a large slate of games available for launch. These include Nintendogs+Cats, DJ Hero, Kingdom Hearts, Saints Row, Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, Ridge Racer, Metal Gear Solid, Professor Layton, Street Fighter IV, Samurai Warriors, Resident Evil. Devs were also shown onscreen gushing over the new possibilities the new handheld will allow. Looks like some remakes are coming too. I've seen officially released pics of StarFox 64 and Paper Mario, and some "secret" pics of Ocarina of Time. Each has had a major face lift and looks great.

The show closed with hundreds of 3DS handhelds with women chained to them entering the audience for people to experience for themselves -- the handhelds, not the women. Initial reports are that the 3D is a bit finicky about how the device is held, but when it's working, it's astounding.

I'm sold, Nintendo, this will be the first portable I will ever purchase, hand cramping be damned. It should be noted that no price or release date has yet been given. Hopefully the appearance of so many playable handhelds and games available to play at the show means the wait won't be too very long.

In terms of content, despite a very rocky start, Nintendo has just completely owned E3. Probably their best show ever. One strange omission: Wii Vitality Sensor! WTF? Did they see Ubisoft's presentation and realize it was ridiculous?

Gotta jam, Sony's conference is coming up right now.

Re: E3 2010

I have to admit to being in a bit of a daze after Nintendo's show. Nevertheless, Sony put on a solid show. Real similar to last year's. As usual, the main thrust was positioning the PS3 as the only media device you need. You know, other than the PSP, of course. The show also brought a few surprises, including Jack Tretton resisting the urge to pound us over the head with numbers.

Kaz Hirai then took the stage. Sony is pushing 3D hard. Everyone, put on your 3D glasses. Oh you don't have them. Tough luck, enjoy the blur. They started with a demo of Killzone 3. First person shooters are certainly on of the best applications of stereographic 3D, and even being able to see it in its full glory, it was easy to see how it could really add to the experience. That's coming February 2011. Other games announced for 3D treatment were Tron, Mortal Kombat, Gran Turismo 5, NBA 2K11, <baseball game>, Sly [Cooper] Collection.

Next was Move, Sony's new motion controller. Or perhaps I should say controllers. Like Nintendo, there is a wand for pointer-like functions, and a separate stick controller for other stuff. It's easy to call it a knock-off of the Wii remote and Nunchuck attachment. There's a reason it's easy. It packed with buttons. They seemed to be making several digs at Kinect (everything), and only one tiny dig at Nintendo (precision).

On stage they demo Sorcery. As you would expect, the standard Move controller acts as a magic wand for your on screen character. It's pretty neat. You waggle it different ways for different effects. It looks really accurate. When you select different spells, the ball on the end of Move changes colors to match. Nice touch. At one point the player picks up a potion, shakes the controller to activate the potion, the potion and the controller begin to glow in unison, the player tilts the potion up to his mouth, and the on screen character consumes the potion. He demonstrated some ways spells can work together against monsters. He also uses spells to alter the environment. This is a big trend I've noticed in up coming games. Epic Mickey, Shaun White Skateboarding use this concept as their central gameplay, and most other action games show very destructable environments. Anyway, the game looks fun and is coming Spring 2011.

Next up was Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11. Unlike the golf games on Wii, there is no getting away with wrist flicks. It's all about full swings. I was impressed that the person playing was able to make par from driver to wedge to putter, quite easily. Seems like hitting an invisible ball would be quite tricky but this dude did it well. The game appeared to control very fluidly, and it looked great too. Golf fans should absolutely love it. Demo will be on the Move demo disc, release date probably 2011 along with many of the other announce Move-enabled games.

Brief look at a crazy crossover. Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and Sly Cooper all in one game. Looks like multiplayer action party. Hard to describe, especially for me. I've never played any of those games. It's called Heroes on the Move. Coming "soon".

Jack Tretton then announced a big partnership with Coca-Cola. Whoopie! Then Kevin Butler hit the stage. He delivered a genuinely funny set, clearly the comedy high point of any of the pressers. This is the big lead up to what we all want to know: when is Move coming?

Move is set for release in the USA on September 19. A few days before on Europa, about month later in Japan. The standard Move controller will be $50. The Navigation add-on is $30. For $100 you get both pieces, an Eye, and the game .... dumroll .... Sports Champions! So apparently you can't release a motion controller without a sports game. Good to know. There is also a PS3 bundle with all of the that for $400.

PSP is getting an ad campaign starting street smart smart mouth. Whoopie!

Augmented reality is another thing Sony is pushing. For the PSP there is a camera game called InviZimals. Basically your PSP acts as magic window to see invisible animals in your house. There is also EyePet PSP coming. And foregoing the camera is God of War: Ghost of Sparta.

Now for some surprises. LittleBigPlanet 2 is coming. Basically, now it's a full blown game creation tool. It has limits of course, but they claim you can make almost any kind of 2D game with it. Sony is taking their Play Create Share philosophy pretty seriously. They showed off several games created in a 24 hour period by selected LBP users dropped into LBP2 without much coaching. Considering the amazing things done in LBP, I'm expecting some mind-blowing user generated content.

Sony is starting a subscription based service, PlayStation Plus. $50 per year ($18 for three months) gets you Minis, PS1 and PS2 games to download, PS3 demos for as long as you keep your subscription. First three months free for a limit time (presumably with a one year subscription).

Exclusive Metal of Honor game coming to PS3 and a remake of Medal of Honor: Frontline included. Game looks amazing.

Next a demo of Dead Space 2. At EA's presser, they showed it up to a boss battle and saved the rest for today. PS3 Exclusive version comes with Dead Space Extraction redone for the Move controller. Pretty sweet.

Another big, big, HUGE surprise as the presentation is halted, screens go black, and the voice of GlaDOS is heard. It's Valve's Gabe Newell! His shirt isn't stained! He's not dissing the PS3 for a change, although he does rightly fear for his life. Portal 2 is coming to PS3 and he says it will be the best version on any console. Steam Cloud is coming to PS3 as well which is presumably the reason he thinks it will be the best version. The first footage of Portal 2 is shown. Not much to see really, it's a bit frantically edited, but it's definitely Portal and, as promised, GlaDOS is still alive. I saw a later interview with a Valvehead. It's twice as long as the first game. It also has a two player Co-Op mode, built that way from the ground up, so in a way it's four times as big as the first game. It's coming to PC, Mac, XBox, and PS3, but I'm not sure when. I hope this isn't Valve's only announcement. GlaDOS closed the segment with, "Let's put our difference behind us. For science. You Monster." I love it.

And rounding things out are a lot of exclusives. Final Fantasy XIV Online is teased. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood multiplayer beta exclusive to PS3. PS3 owners are so lucky to test products for free. Gran Turismo 5 looks amazing. Having played TrackMania in anaglyphic 3D I really want to try this. InFamous 2. Mafia II exclusive DLC. Maybe some others, it all went by pretty quick.

Ooops! One more huge surprise. David Jaffe is a lying motherfucker! Twisted Metal is coming to PS3. This has been the subject of so many denials it's not even funny. Actual Sweet Tooth in an actual ice cream truck rolls onto the stage. Holy. Crap. David Jaffe and Scott Campbell walk on to intro the game. Looks like classic Twisted Metal mayhem, with a class-based twist. This means support vehicles like tow trucks and helicopter extraction and insertion (hot). Yes, flying vehicles have come to Twisted Metal. David demos with some others and explains a capture the flag type game mode, one of several new modes. It's pretty involved. This looks really tight. I loved the first one.

Good show, Sony ... although ... Team ICO's The Last Guardian was conspicuously absent. Considering how many things they showed slated for 2011, it kinda makes you go "Hmmmmm" that this wasn't one of them.

Re: E3 2010

Here are some alleged specs and releases for the Nintendo 3DS. Site is NSFW. It has teh boobiez and has a Japanese bent, so who knows what else.

Safer for work specs and no releases here:
