Hello,
I'm an experienced programmer, but NEW to Game Maker and it's unique methods.
I have several game ideas that I want to create and I'm looking for some decent tutorials
as to game actions, scoring, lives, and placing solid objects for characters to avoid or jump on.

One of the best ways to learn Game Maker is the book The Game Maker's Apprentice. It is really excellent. It is written for people with absolutely no experience, but it is just as suitable for anyone wanting to learn Game Maker. It is also filled with solid game design advice and practices. My local library had a copy in the stacks, yours may as well.

Like you, I came to Game Maker as an experienced programmer. It wasn't that difficult to get up and running very quickly once I learned how the interface and event-driven game architecture worked. I jumped straight into GML, but the drag-and-drop system can be a fun diversion for a traditional programmer. I suggest just reading the help file and trying the official tutorials. I didn't even do the tutorials and got on just fine on my own.
