Re: Introductions

Hi, everyone!

I just recently downloaded and registered GM7 and this is basically my first foray into developing my own games.  Up until January of this year I did work in the game industry as a Lead Game Designer for a shovelware factory called "Sensory Sweep".  So my skills are mostly game design, graphic design, etc... not really programming.  But I'm having a blast with Game Maker so far, and hopefully I can see at least a portion of my vision come to fruition with the help of Game Maker and you chaps smile.

Re: Introductions

Oh no, Sensory Sweep. You were caught-up in that mess? My deepest sympathies. I think you can count on having a better time with Game Maker.

Re: Introductions

Hi everyone, I'm longcat. (I don't know why no one has taken that username anywhere.) I've been using GML for a long time and I'm hopefully going to start using something else. But in the mean time, I thought I would join GMLscripts and Yoyo games. I like isometric games, simple eye-candy, retro operating systems that aren't terrible and clever thinking outside the box.

Re: Introductions

Welcome to the site, AizenSousuke. The Experimental Gameplay Project produces a lot of really interesting work. I like your game "Landing". Great theme for that sort of puzzle.

And welcome to you, longcat. I know the feeling of wanting to move on to other platforms. Sometimes I wish Game Maker wasn't so easy to use. I can't seem to stop! smile

Re: Introductions

It's me, IceMetalPunk. Many of you know me from the GMC, some of you don't. I've been using GM since 5.3 (so when was that? '04?), doing web design since 2000, and currently learning to work with C++. Platformer physics (specifically collisions) are the bane of my existence; puzzle logic is my favorite thing to program.

I've been using GMLScripts as a reference for a while; looks like I now need to post around here to submit my scripts, so this is me saying, "Howdy". And no, I don't say "howdy" in real life; I'm not a redneck biggrin (no offense intended towards any of you who may be rednecks).

Re: Introductions

My neck may not be red, but I do occassionally say "howdy", as do a surprising number of Aussies I've recently come to learn. Howdy, IMP!

Re: Introductions

Hi there! some of you probably know me from the GMC, or wherever.. i used to be signed in here long ago, since this was my recurrent site to find useful functions since like.. ever?, but never posted so my account got deleted tongue

In short: I'm a GameMaker user since 2005, and i feel pretty good at it; i like to make both games and programs on it, and im not quite sure on wich of them i work the best hehe. I also know some basics around other languajes as C#, C++ and a bit of java but i never really used them for anything serious (only to make DLL complements for GameMaker and automated tasks)

Re: Introductions

Hey I'm Vivi_IX (and not spam wink ). I've been using Game Maker for nearly 3 years now and stumbled across gmlscripts about 2 years ago. I love this place. It's very usefull for finding how to do cool things in GML.

My main use for GM is making simple programs. I thing my favorite area of coding is in playing with strings. I would have eventually posted a word counting script on here for a look-over but I dont think I ever made it good enough that someone would probably be better off just rewritting it.

I'm one of those people that have yet ventured into the relm of d3d_ but I am almost familiar with every other gml function. My other favorite area is "surfaces", which were a god-send in the area of GM cpu efficiency <3.

Re: Introductions

Welcome to the forums, Vivi_IX. Even if your script isn't perfect, if it is useful you should consider posting it in the Script Submission forum. From there we can see if it needs a tune-up.

Re: Introductions

Hi Everyone,

I am Red otherwise known as kiwikel, have been mucking around off and on with Gamemaker since version 5 still only a learner but I hope this time I can keep it(the game programming) in the in the solid matter above the shoulders. I spent some years mucking around with VB.net but I decided that game programming would be of more use in todays market.
Anyway it's good to see the progress is going well.

I am about to buy the latest GM but would like to know whether the Studio version would be better?? any thoughts

Kind Regards
kel
PS Nice Site you got here!

Re: Introductions

Welcome to the forums, Kel!

GM:Studio is a powerful option if you want to start reaching people beyond Windows. The ability to design once and deploy on so many platforms is amazing. The cost of the product reflects that power, and it could be a bit much for a hobbyist, but as a professional tool, it is reasonably priced. Of course, there may be other expenses as well, for instance the need for a Mac computer for iOS deployment. If you'd rather not shoulder the expense, GameMaker 8.1 remains an inexpensive alternative, although it is no longer in active development, so don't expect new features to come to it. New features are being added to GM:S at a steady pace.

Beyond GM:Studio's price/power, the other important consideration is its stability. While capable, GM:Studio does have bugs. These are generally addressed very quickly when they are reported and can be reproduced by YoYo. You might want to keep an eye on the bug tracker before making a purchasing decision.

GM:S also works a little differently than you may be used to. For most GM users, these changes won't be an issue. I'd say it is 95% compatible with previous versions. If you are planning to "port" an old game to GM:Studio, expect the need to make a few changes before it will work correctly.

Re: Introductions

Hi there, I've been using this site for a we tips here and there and I think it is a great idea / resource and I hope to see some more life kicked into the sharing and contributing of scripts.

Especially now with GMS that is now buzzing in the world of game making and HTML5.

I believe there is alot of time that can be saved if we share as well as functionality that can be added to GMS...
Scripts also help me more to understand and learn, since an engine with many scripts is either too complex to fit into my engines or games,
you learn less in the process.

Keep up the great work xot!

Re: Introductions

Hi Boysano, welcome to the forums and thank you for the kind words.

I'm glad you've found the site helpful despite the fact that many of the scripts need updating for GM:Studio. A major site overhaul is currently in the works which will make updates easier and will provide improved support for multiple versions of GameMaker.

Re: Introductions

Welcome to the forums, NervaL928. I look forward to seeing any submissions from you. I saw your comment on the sprite_replace_color script and have replied.

I don't know if we have any other French or French-speaking members. The forums don't see a lot of activity, to be honest.

Do you make cool stuff with redstone?
